Freetown, April 10, 2008. Club of Madrid Member Antonio Mascarenhas Monteiro, former President of Cape Verde lead the third and last Club of Madrid-CGG mission to Sierra Leone. The members of the delegation advocated for increased high-level support for women in politics through affirmative action and strengthened the capacities of female candidates for July local elections. Kampala, March 7, 2008 - The Club of Madrid and the European Parliamentarians for Africa (AWEPA) launched on March 5-7, 2008 the AWLP in Uganda. A high-level mission led by Club of Madrid Members Kjell Mange Bondevik, Former Prime Minister of Norway, and Mary Robinson, Former President of Ireland, along with international expert practitioner Pregaluxmi Govender from South Africa, former Member of Parliament, was organized to support women’s political leadership in their efforts to pass gender related legislation. Lagos, February 21, 2008 - The Club of Madrid, in partnership with Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) Nigeria, organized the second of three planned missions to Nigeria from 18 to 22 February 2008 following the first successful mission to Nigeria in November 2007. The mission allowed for dialogue and shared experiences with different key Nigerian leaders to secure support and concrete commitments by political parties, electoral commission, electoral reform committee, the media and Civil society to support the realisation of women’s participation in politics. Freetown, December 14, 2007 - The Club of Madrid, in partnership with Sierra Leone’s Campaign for Good Governance, today concluded a four-day African Women Leaders Project (AWLP) mission, aimed at strengthening democracy through women’s political participation.  Chandrika Kumaratunga, former President of Sri Lanka and newly-inducted member of the Club of Madrid; and Senator Gloria Musu Scott, Former Chief Justice of Liberia, led the mission, which included AWLP Coordinator Rosemary Kaduru and representatives of local NGO Campaign for Good Governance (CGG). Abuja, November 30, 2007 - The Club of Madrid, in partnership with Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) Nigeria, organized the first of three planned missions to Nigeria from 28th to 30th November 2007. The objective of the high-level delegation was to contribute to the strengthening of female political leadership and, in the long-term, increase women’s political participation and public confidence in women in governance. The delegation was led by the Former Primer Minister of the Netherlands His Excellency Wim Kok; and Dr. Miria Matembe, Former Member of the Ugandan and Pan African Parliaments, and Former Minister for Ethics and Integrity. Freetown, 31 May, 2007 – A high-level mission of the Club of Madrid is in Sierra Leone to support women’s political leadership. Former President of Botswana, Ketumile Masire; former Prime Minister of Canada, Kim Campbell; and Member of the East African Legislative Assembly and former MP of Uganda, Dora Byamukama, lead the mission. The delegation, spending three days in Freetown and one in Northern Province capital Makeni, met with more than 120 female and male leaders of Government, Parliament, political parties, local councilors, traditional leaders, and media and civil society representatives. Abuja, 26 March, 2007 – The Club of Madrid today launched the African Women Leaders Project (AWLP) at a meeting in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja. The project will provide high-level support to women leaders in Nigeria, Sierra Leone and a third country still to be determined. This 18-month initiative, undertaken with funding from the European Commission’s Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights, will contribute to the strengthening of female political leadership in the project countries and, in the long-term, to greater public confidence in women political leaders and increased women’s political participation.
