On March 25-27, the Club of Madrid held a strategy meeting to initiate its implementation of the African Women Leaders Project in Nigeria and Sierra Leone. Partner organisations, associates, and representatives from the Nigerian President’s office and from the European Union delegation office in Nigeria participated in the meeting.
During the meeting the participants decided on mission activities, including mission dates (3 for each country), identification of participants, objectives, expected results and monitoring instruments. The participants also agreed on the roles that each organisation will fulfil and clarified administrative procedures for this project.
It was also decided that during and between missions the CoM will support, when appropriate and within the limits of the existing budget, other activities that the counterparts organise to support their work promoting women’s leadership.
With regards to the online activities the participants agreed to identify participants for the project online forum when the website is up and running and provide the necessary documents (surveys, studies, reports, related legal national and international norms) and links to include in the web.
The meeting allowed for all project interlocutors to meet together for the first time to discuss goals and expectations for the project. It also provided the opportunity to raise concerns and address key challenges to implementation, including identification of participants, timing of missions, issues of ownership, any misperceptions of project objectives and potential resistance to specific project activities. Al this was discussed in the political context of each target country.
All participants underlined the importance of this project and its potential to have an impact in the region. According to a participant representing the EC delegation in Nigeria, this is the first macro project targeting the issue of political empowerment of women in the area, even though the implementation time does not look sufficient. There was also a consensus on the need to go beyond women parliamentarians [the project title has a focus on parliamentarians].
