Democracy that delivers

The Club of Madrid is an independent organization whose purpose and priority is to contribute to strengthening democracy in the world.  It stimulates, promotes and conducts initiatives and activities and participates in projects seeking this objective.  The Club of Madrid acts as a consultative body for governments, democratic leaders, and institutions involved in processes of democratic transition.
The personal and practical experience of its members - 66 former heads of state and government - in processes of democratic transition and consolidation is the Club of Madrid’s unique resource. Along with the experience and cooperation of other high level political practitioners and governance experts, this resource is a working tool to convert ideas into practical and feasible recommendations and action plans for implementation.
The Club of Madrid brings several unique resources to its work:
* Personal experience and reputation of former Heads of State and Government
* Access to the world's leading experts and scholars on democracy  issues
* A focus on democratic transition and consolidation
* A commitment to practical programs with measurable results
Membership in the Club of Madrid is offered to respected former Heads of State and Government of democratic countries who contribute their personal experience and knowledge.  Appointment to the Club of Madrid is proposed by the Board of Directors and approved by the General Assembly.  The Club of Madrid's by-laws require that 80 percent of its members must be from transitional democracies and 20 percent from consolidated democracies.
One of the Club of Madrid's major assets is the ability of its members to offer peer-to-peer advice and counseling to current leaders struggling to build or consolidate democracy.  The Club of Madrid's members can also help focus much needed international attention on targeted countries and leverage the work of other institutions trying to promote democracy.
The Club of Madrid's members are supported by a network of world-class experts who work together to assist countries and offer assistance on a range of democratic reform issues.
The Club of Madrid is composed of five executive and advisory bodies:
* Members
* Board of Directors
* General Assembly
* General Secretariat
* Advisory Committee
The Club of Madrid is coordinating the implementation of the AWLP project in the three countries to ensure coherence between the different activities. It is also coordinating the participation of Club of Madrid Members and experts in the different activities, especially throughout the missions. It is also responsible for the creation of the website and the organization of the final conference in Brussels, as well as the drafting and editing of the final publication. The Club of Madrid will  play a leading role in the drafting of all project reports. It will also take care of all the administrative and expense justification work.
